Okay, I tried some stuff...
It seems as if the applet starts to malfunction after logging off and on again
or after the x-server has been restarted.
It works perfectly after a full reboot.
This problem seems to affect a series of other applets not included in
the gnome-applets package, too (music
Out of a sudden, it works again after a reboot.
Strange, because I already rebooted my system yesterday, prior to noticing that
the applet was not functioning...
