Hi Alex, sorry I have bot been back, well I have only been able to test
inkscape in ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which is the one I use, all seems to work
well with the version in the ubuntu repos, but the only way to test
other inkscape versions (newer that is) I would have to upgrade my whole
system, if I t

All official packages for Ubuntu can be found in the Ubuntu Software
Centre. Alternatively, just open a link to apt://inkscape in your
browser, and this will let you do a one-click installation.

can see there if all dependencies and versions are satisfiable.

Sure, I can test ubuntu package if you can point me to it, can't seem to see
one in Inkscape download page, or ar you referring to

I'll leave the report against upstream Inkscape open.
By the way, it would be great if you could try testing the Ubuntu
package sometime. If you notice the same problem, please let us know.

It is the source downloaded directly from Inkscape website.

I'll get back with dependencies and log, although I have compiled
Inkscape before (many times), this is the first time I get this issue,
but doesn't hurt to double check.

Not reproduced with (self-compiled) Inkscape 0.48.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8
(nor with the official package for Mac OS X of 0.48.2).
Could you provide more details about your system (installed
dependencies), and maybe the configure logs for 0.48.2?
