What appears to be happening here is that X goes away while Compiz is
still working, thus causing the X client libraries not to be able to
write to the pipe. I'm not sure why this would happen. Can you still
reproduce it?

I was able to reproducing. But after some tries I'm by now using
Unity... !!?
