Alright, I've tested the packages in this PPA:

These are direct no-change syncs to the PPA from debian unstable. npm
works perfectly. Here is a snippet from running the 'subway' install
script from the juju charm, which uses npm for installin

They're still building, so please wait until all of them are built. But
then test. If it all goes well, we can sync all these packages into
precise.

When you run npm, it crashes every time. I am using Precise (12.04)
Beta 2, with updates as of 13 April 2012. I Googled and Debian had the
same bug, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=664660 .
Debian fixed this by upgrading to a newer NPM.
I filed the crash bug as bug 980908.

Seems like the Debian maintainer has abandoned NPM. There is a PPA here
that has working 1.1.9 packages:
https://launchpad.net/~chris-lea/+archive/node.js/+packages
They are quite different though, so I think it will be relatively
painful to resolve the differences.
