Sebastien Bacher claims the "Failed to parse" error was fixed in newer Ubuntu versions (dated Jul 2011), see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control- center/+bug/817976. Apparently, the parse error has not been fixed. The broken task bar was not addressed in the 817876 bug. -- Y

OK. I reinstalled 10.04.3. The broken taskbar is present even before the first update. Its broken out of the box. Here's the gnome error from the first update: Setting up capplets-data (1:2.30.1-0ubuntu2) ... WARNING: Failed to parse default value `[? ???;gnome-appearance-properties.
