This bug was fixed in the package partman-partitioning - 83ubuntu2 --- partman-partitioning (83ubuntu2) precise; urgency=low * On systems with only GPT disks, check that an EFI System Partition or a BIOS Boot Partition exists, as appropriate (LP: #855871). -- Colin WatsonTu

You've noted that reiserfs and xfs behave differently from ext4 here. The reason for this is that GPT disks ordinarily require you to dedicate a partition to boot loader code (as distinct from the MBR format where boot loader code was often stuffed into unused space in a rather risky way). In your

If I re-install over a system that was installed using 'guided: entire disk' partitioning and simply re-format the ext4 root partition as an xfs partition, the grub installation error does not re-occur. The system still fails to boot, however, which seems to be a different bug (bug 856763). -- Y

That's interesting, because it is not necessary to create any additional partition when I do manual partitioning with an ext4 filesystem. I've posted some install logs about that in bug 856763 . I still believe this bug here to be unique because it causes grub to fail to install, which does not oc

The bios_grub partition is not automatically created simply by virtue of leaving some blank space. If you're using manual partitioning, you do need to set it up by hand. That said, it's still a bug that GRUB is failing hard in this case, just a less serious one. ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)

In another installation, also with xfs, I left a 1-2 GB unpartitioned space at the beginning of the disk (plenty of space for the bios_grub partition), but grub again failed. In another installation, I also tried the same patition layout as the original bug report (first 4GB swap, 1-2 GB unpartiti
