FWIW, after trying herd 3 32 bit, i downloaded and tried herd 3 64 bit,
and it works fine (in fact I'm typing this message on it). Off to see
if I can get WinXP running inside KVM!

I just downloaded and tried the Herd 3 build of feisty-desktop-i386.iso
and get the same problem with it.
