I'm getting the 'cannot update .ICEauthority' message on 64 bit Desktop
Lucid. However, login still occurs. There is no .ICEauthority file in
the File System.

Dont work for me.
1 - sudo chown username:username /home/username/.ICEauthority
2 - sudo chmod 600 /home/username/.ICEauthority
3- sudo chown -R /home/username/
In the step 3, say me lacks a openrand after $ HOME ...

It has happened with me too, but update with the synaptic! I've tried
several solutions availabe on the internet like:
1 - sudo chown username:username /home/username/.ICEauthority
2 - sudo chmod 600 /home/username/.ICEauthority
3 - delete the file .ICEauthority
