On the attached screenshot you can see that there are other display
glitches (activities button with stranger colors) and white blocks over
the synaptic title bar. My video card is an ATI Radeon Mobility using
the open source driver. May all thos display problems be related?

On this screenshot, you can see the first workspace in overview mode.
The thumbnails of the applications are correct (firefox and terminal),
but, in the background, you can see synaptic, which is actually opened
in the second workspace and should not be displayed at all.
