Fixed - It was not a luma problem.
The problem was fixed by one of the upgrades. It now woks based on:
$ dpkg -l|grep luma
ii luma 2.3-1.1 gui utility for accessing and managing LDAP
$ dpkg -l |grep libc6
ii libc6 2.5-0ubuntu11 GNU C Library: Shared libraries
ii libc6-dev 2.5-0ubuntu11 GNU C
