I can confirm this in Jaunty. When doing full-screen with the Always on
the Top option enabled, I can see the VLC window with the title and a
blank video window on top of the full-screened video window.

Hmm, a few months down the line, and the problem still persists. I read
here "fixed upstream", "fix released" but in my experience, nothing has
actually been fixed. Using Gutsy, fully updated, still, about 50% of the
times, the top panel remains visible when going to fullscreen. It never
happens wh
When I go to full screen mode (only recently, it worked a while ago!)
then a window with empty title appears in taskbar, and taskbar is visible on
top of window.
If I click on the taskbar entry, then taskbar hides, and all works
correct

Using a compositing window manager fixes the issue, so this makes me
suspect this is a metacity problem.

Yes, that's right. It's panel not toolbar :-). VLC really goes in
fullscreen when the top panel is at bottom, but, at least in my case,
the picture is shifted upwards and not bigger. It simply looks just a
little better. When I returned the panel back in the top position the
problem with VLC was ba
Err, I think that's the panel we are talking about, toolbars are those
inside the applications. It works when the panel is at bottom, but not
when it is at the top. And doesn't work for the sides too. VLC goes
fullscreen only with panel in the bottom direction.

I had the same problem... The workaround proposed in the other thread
also left the top toolbar visible in my case.
However, when I moved the toolbar to the bottom (right-click toolbar -->
properties --> orientation), the problem was gone, even when I moved it
back to the top. Maybe this will work
I confirm that - the workaround is better but not the full solution.

I was able to compile vlc on my own. It does play video in fullscreen
correctly now, but it still ignore the option to stay on top. Might
there be a bug in vlc?

crimsun soon (I created a patch but was notified our vlc is going to
sync with svn to solve many issues)
