The laptop-mode mode switching annoyances are largely due to the fact
that Ubuntu tries to control laptop mode from acpi-support, and has
patched all of the detection logic out of laptop-mode-tools, and AFAICT
for no reason other than "NIH". The upstream laptop-mode-tools package,

working for me with an ipw2200 card, brilliant! this should be in the standard
setup soon!
one remark:
- why use laptop-mode? i never really got that package; if you place the
scripts in /etc/acpi/battery.d and /etc/acpi/ac.d it also works, seems cleaner
to me.

biggest annoyance, is ubuntu does not realize that it should be in
laptop mode unless it is currently running and then AC power removed.
if booted with battery only, it does not know that it should be in
battery mode.

New scripts now check for ipw2200 and ipw3945 drivers instead of vendor
and device id.
The helper function is saved as /etc/acpi/intelWifiPwr.sh
The script for battery mode is saved as
/etc/laptop-mode/batt-start/20-wireless-battery.sh
The script for ac mode is saved as /etc/laptop-mode/batt-sto
