Thanks for your answer,
as gnome-shell is installed via gnome3-team ppa, it might itself propose
this font or at least tell users to add your ugr ppa too.

The UGR project is working on this. The have a hacked together package at
http://launchpad.net/ugr-cantarell
They are working on cleaning it up and will upload it soon.
