I used the normal classic session. And now, even though I'm still using
the normal classic session, I'm having the same problem with this
Thunderbird "reply" window. This didn't happen yesterday, and I haven't
done a reboot since I last used Thunderbird.

When you checked the classic session, did you try with or without
effects(compiz/metacity)?
If you tried the "No Effects" session can you try it with effects(normal
Classic session) and report back?

No. I had the same problem running a VMWARE virtual XP machine under my
Linux host OS. I didn't try this with open office, and that's the other
major suite that I use.
I have since found that the "classic ubuntu" choice still operates as it
did - perfectly - under 11.04.
