Based on input from some web-sire (no recollection of which) I edited
the etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and set ifupdown managed to
"true" - booted and it works..

It may look like wlan0 is "off" however: when I boot the very same
machine with another os this os locates and uses the wifi-card AND there
is no hw switch for the wireless card
