the tool list the changes which are going to be applied, if you use a
distribution being worked like feisty you should have a look on what the
upgrade is going to do before accepting it, not a bug from the
distribution, some packages were not installable due to a python
transition, you should reins
I made the update with Synaptic Package Manager. (I always use this
tool)

Well, you are using development version. This was expected, specially
with all this python conversion that happened today :)
Try installing ubuntu-desktop package.
