does not kill the pdftops process - this keeps going as long as I have
dared to wait and must be manually killed.

I am getting the same behavior using a Lucid installation with all the
updates - pdftops processes that use lots of resources and never end,
nothing coming out of the printer. I have tried two different printers
and get the same behavior. These printers worked fine a week or two

i successfully compiled ghostscript 9.02 on Natty, but no change.
When i kill the pdftops process there is an error entry in the logs:
