I think I'm getting the same bug, but the error message I get is:

That message is from gthumb itself, it doesn't even work to manually
download pictures with the menu item.
I'll take a look at it.

Same here ; notice the camera is obviously detected by gnome-volume-
manager (I killed it and ran it with -n in console to check).

I am having the same problems.
When I attach my Canon Ixus to an USB port, the import dialog pops up but after
choosing to import the images, nothing is happening.
I am not sure if this is a problem with gthumb or gnome-volume-manager-
gthumb.
