It doesn't seem to read rootpw either. I don't know how it's
implemented, because if the backend is su I would expect the root
password to be required anyway.

As a workaround you can try this command which give access to your X session to
root:
xhost +
I don't know how to make this permanent, I am researching a similar bug.

connect to X server...

Well in fact sudo can not connect to the X server.
In GNOME gksudo works
