I am not sure if I can say 'patches welcome" for this one. There is a
very little sense in allowing the buttons to be moved to the right, it
collides with the unity design in so many ways.

You can use Ubuntu Tweak for easily doing it. But IMO, buttons on the
left are now necessary because of the panel integration in maximized
windows.
