On my ubuntu system, it turned out to be a problem with X.org font
paths. At some point (I think between hoary and breezy) the location
of the fonts changed but the xorg.conf file didn't get changed during
the upgrade.
Once I fixed up the xorg.conf font paths, the problem went away.

I'm the Debian maintainer for Ion3 and I have seen similar symptoms, but I
don't believe Ion3 is at fault.
I tracked what I was seeing down to weird behaviour of the X library with
fontsets, which I reported in Debian as bug #421025.

I don't completely understand this bug yet but http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=270412";>this thread
in the Ubuntu forums suggested that it was the same as bug #57083
affecting emacs and the solution described there (which may be bad, I
don't know enough about this problem or part of the d
rejecting malone task.
