I have the same issue if I install the compiz-gnome everything works
fine without compiz-gnome you can not switch on the effects at all.

I included the output in the description and added instructions on how
to reproduce it.

After updating my edgy installation to feisty I installed desktop-
effects. When trying enable desktop-effects it complained that I didn't
Ok its back to desktop-effects i can still use the output from those
commands if you can attach them.

The package desktop-effect does not reside in ubuntu Edgy repos.
Changing package to compiz. Can you please attach the output of apt-
cache show compiz-gnome and apt-cache policy desktop-effects to this bug
