Changing /dev/hda (the dvd drive's device entry) to /dev/dvd in
/etc/fstab as per Robert's comment fixed it also for me.
My fstab was like this after the upgrade and my cdrom/dvd-rw drive
didn't work properly and couldn't read audio cds:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
#
I also just deleted the corresponding line from fstab. The drive
continues to work as it should, but Nautilus doesn't display a CD-ROM 1
anymore.

I'm not sure what did it, but I did a fresh install off the beta CD, and
install all updates through today, and the problem is gone. I did not
need to modify my /etc/fstab or any other file to fix it.
Does this work on anyone else's machine?

I recently did a fresh install of feisty from a daily cd build a few
days ago, and a few days later realized I had this problem. Changing
/dev/hda (the dvd drive's device entry) to /dev/dvd in /etc/fstab as per
Robert's comment fixed it.

I have the same problem on a Samsung X10 laptop.
I could not do a fresh install becuase the alternative installer could not
mount the cdrom despite booting from it to begin with.
After an online upgrade from Edgy I now have a phantom cdrom icon on the
desktop and no access to the real one.

I'm not familiar with gnome-vfs or what it does, but the problem was
fixed by changing /dev/hda to /dev/dvd. No further action was necessary
after a reboot. Could this be a problem with the installer not
configuring the devices correctly?

I confirm the same issue on a fresh install of Herd 5 with all the
latest updates.
I get:

No /dev/hda exists, but /dev/dvd and /dev/dvdrw both exist.
I attached my /etc/fstab and my lshal -t.

lshal output is attached.
In any case the problem was solved after I removed the cdrom and floppy
entries from /etc/fstab. However this might be a problem for people who
need devices to appear in /etc/fstab.

Thanks,
I don't think it's a gnome-mount related bug. Sounds more like a gnome-vfs one,
or an hal one.
Could you please attach here the result of lshal.
Thanks.

Here's my /etc/fstab. The cdrom and floppy entries were generated
automatically during the installation of a previous version of ubuntu

Thanks for your bug report.
Could you please paste your /etc/fstab here.
