This is Debian bug 345700. Adding option XaaNoSolidFillRect to the top
of your Screen section of your xorg.conf works around it, like this:
Section "Screen"
# Workaround for Debian bug 345700, Ubuntu bug 4
Option "XaaNoSolidFillRect"
...
