I see the same problem using two machines running trusty amd64. However,
in my case the remote system was configured to prompt the user for
confirmation to allow incoming VNC connections. You may want to ensure
this is not the case.
The behaviour can be changed using "vino-preferences", and then

I was trying to connect to a machine right next to me and the vinagre
session was black, but the system I connected to responded to all mouse
events (didn't try keyboard) within the vinagre window. SO the
connection was in place, just no image. I tried several different
resolution / compression set

I noticed that although the screen is black, it is connected. If I shut
down screen sharing on the Mac, vinagre reports that the connection has
been lost.

Problem confirmed on my 11.04 install as well connection to Mac OS X
Snow Leopard. Vinagre asks for a username/password pair (and only allows
up to 8 characters for the password) and just displays a black screen.
Remmina works when I just provide the VNC password that I set up on the

I've not bothered with trying to get vinagre to work, and have installed
Remmina instead ..
hopefully it will be resolved though - it would be nice to have the option of
reverting back if need be
