What I've found out so far:
Running "radeon" driver:
* Had system (radeon, compiz, googleearth) running like charm
* However booting did not work any more
tried 3 times without success

Same problem with 10.10 and 11.04.
Kernel boots but fails (dies) when switching to video.
Blacklisting radeon (/etc/modprobe.d) and disabling fglrx (/etc/X11/xorg.conf)
helps
to boot the system normally.
Video features are poor, compiz / openGL / googleearth fail to work.
Any help out there?
After updating the system to day (latest available patches) I was able
to boot the system with the radeon module, but the system used about 38
sec to boot vs 24 sec with the radeon module blacklisted.

You are right, this problem seems to be because in our laptop there are hybrid
video card, and at moment the only solution is disable use of one of these.
Adding same line in blacklist like Morten said, it fix mountainously the
problem, but like him I hope to see solution.
I don't understand onl
For me the solution was to blacklist the radeon module.
In /etc/modprobe.d/my-blacklist.conf (can be any file in this directory, but I
prefere my own) I added the two lines:
# blacklisting radeon driver as it will not allow 2.6.38-8-generic to boot
blacklist radeon

Hi!
I have the same problem I think. My PC is a Acer 8943G laptop. It stops in the
middle of the boot after about 25 sec with a BUG when using the Linux version
2.6.38-8-generic (buildd@allspice) (gcc version 4.5.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro
4.5.2-8ubuntu3) ) #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:24 UTC 2011 (Ubu
Looks like you have hybrid graphics. You probably need to blacklist
whatever kernel driver you're not using, or switch the unused video chip
off in bios if it lets you.
