Same (or similar) problem here on an HP laptop. The larger problem is
that keyboard controls don't work at all on Thunderbird, but the delete
operation is the one that I use most frequently. Arrow and tab
navigation do not work either though. Opening a message in a new tab
seems to correct the prob
Also present in maverick, the difference being that the function key has
no effect:
$ apt-cache policy thunderbird
thunderbird:

Using the function key with delete works. So this may be a mapping
issue with MacBook Pros.
