I don't think this is a duplicate. The behaviour I'm reporting leaves
Banshee in a usable state. I can still use all features of the
application. The problem is not a crash or a hang, but that the stream
doesn't connect, nothing is reported, and after two more attempts, the
stream works.

I think there's also something else going on (perhaps with filling a
buffer, although that's a shot in the dark) beyond a UI issue: streams I
know to work for sure in other applications (ie. they are up, open for
connection, and latency is low) still take at least 3 tries to connect
in Banshee.

If Banshee cannot connect to a stream, it would be wise to report why,
instead of simply reporting no error/warning at all, and returning to
the "Idle" state.
Hopefully that clears things up
Are you saying the expectation is that:
a) Banshee should connect on the first attempt,
b) Banshee should inform the user of connection failures
or
c) both?
