check the latest version 7 workaround.
Skype 4.0.0.8 on a 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't work with the latest
version of pidgin-skype from the official repository.

Yes, this bug is annoying.
The solution is just as n3ko said, and the .so file (and instructions) can be
found here:
http://eion.robbmob.com/
it can work with the "pidgin-skype" package, without installing
skype4pidgin.deb.
Just move the .so file to pidgin's directory.

I can confirm the fix.
Copy the .so files from skype4pidgin.deb (#deb/CONTENTS/usr/lib/purple-2) to
/usr/lib/purple-2 and the plugin starts working again.

Actually the bug is already fixed upstream!
If you download and install the plugin directly from the author's
website (skype4pidgin), it works again, but got other problems.
