found temporary fix with
sudo rmmod -f acer-wmi
sudo rfkill unblock all
rfkill list all
from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1745317. Will try the
permanent solution given and report back.

Same issue.
"lshw -C network" claims device is disabled, also gives {driver=ath9k
driverversion=2.6.38-8-generic}.
"nm-tool" lists state as unavailable.
"iwconfig" shows no obvious problems.
"lsmod" brings up the following (possibly) relevant lines:
ath9k 118238 0
