Right then, spent an hour and updated to the latest beta from the PPA source
you gave and this copy works fine, I can now import mp4, edit and export to
mp3..
The standard repo version wouldn't even let me work on mp3's after opening
and would not let me open 'any' mp4 files that I have.

I imported one sample mp4 video file without problems. Does it always
happen if you try to open this file? Can you attach this file to this
bug report? Can you try the latest upstream version of audacity from the
daily PPA [1] and report back if it has the same issue?
