i haven't seen this in a very long time; compiz was apparently causing
some gap in the panel, though i don't see how; and that was fixed a
while ago, maybe it was the same thing and with my theme it was
something more conspicuous (white)

yea it's the gnome classic desktop session; and the gap shows up but
isn't always next to the network icon

We'll need more info about this particular issue. Judging from what I
see in the small portion of panel you attached as a screenshot, I guess
you're not running unity. Could you please further describe your setup?
Is this xubuntu or another alternative version of Ubuntu? Is this indeed
not in unity

just re-read what you said, and noticed it put indicator-network; i have
no idea why it did, i think i picked "Network icon" in the apport
dialogue; which would be a bug there as well ... but the intent of the
bug is the gap for that connection type, not with "indicator-network",
do i have to file
i'm using natty and as far as i know they glommed it together

Indicator-network works with connman and depends on it, not nm
(network-manager).
So, if you have issues with nm-applet icon, you probably mean
network-manager-gnome icon in notification area.
