Got the mistake: in the network-manager, the wireless network was
deactivated (nm-applet -> wireless network). This is a bit confusing, as
my BIOS-setting allows the hardware switch to do several things
(de/activate bluetooth, wireless and WWAN) and ubuntu seems to overwrite
this setting.

okay, corresponding mainline kernel 2.6.38.2 shows the same behaviour. I
also rechecked working hardware with a 10.10 livecd, so it's a
regression. I'm not quite sure which options you run lspci with, so
here's the output of lspci -v.
