Today I found a way to solve it. Just had to change proxy configurations
from "GNOME" to "environment".

I started having the same problem under Ubuntu 11.04 64 bits. I have
Windows 7 on dual-boot and installed Pidgin on it too. Both MSN and
Gtalk work perfectly there, but only Gtalk works on Ubuntu.
This problem started yesterday (06-16-2011); Pidgin used to work with no
trouble until then.
