Not only is samba not installed by default, which it should be but when
installed it doesn't work. Then there is the System Settings -> Sharing
-> File Sharing which allows you to set up files to share using samba.
Of course the dialog doesn't tell you if samba is working, not working,
or not inst
Kevin, this is pitily not a summer of code project. I just wrote the
spec and looked into the possibility to write this using a standardized
protocol. I have not done any other work (yet).

Samba not being installed is only an issue in a mixed network. For
those of us with no need to interoperate with legacy Windows networks,
this would be unnecessary cruft.
