Confirmed, the target machine is Breezy. So I guess this is fixed from
Dapper onwards. Should I close the bug then?

It also works without the simlink for me on Dapper and Edgy.
If i refer to the versions of bash and openssh you quoted, you are on a
breezy system (to check, you can see on which release you point in
/etc/apt/sources.list).

I think that the machine target is Dapper, I am not sure how to check
this, though. Could you check your versions of bash and OpenSSH ?
The login shell (echo $SHELL) is /bin/sh which is a symlink to
/bin/bash.
