Same symptoms, same solution. For me the top processes were event,
kondemand, xfslogd and xfsdatad -- maybe it helps someone searching for
this. Thanks to Stefan for the solution, I wouldn't have thought of
this.

I also had this problem on a ThinkPad T61 running 10.10
The "ifconfig eth0 down" trick has worked so far. I did notice the
ethernet port light being on even though I am on wi-fi. (and it's still
on)
Could these possibly be related?

This started happening today for me. Thinkpad X61T.
Machine unusable for tablet functionality due to lag.
Fortunately the "ifconfig eth0 down" seems to do the trick.

I don't know the root cause, but here's workaround :
ifconfig eth0 down
