I experienced the same crash under the same circumstances; fresh install
of Ubuntu 6.10, installed NVIDIA legacy driver for x86 processors
version 1.0.7184; running an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU with a Geforce 3
Ti500 graphics card. Crash occurred when attempting to start Beryl.

seemed to cause it.

i was able to reproduce it. i was following the
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Edgy_Installation_Guide and when
i did a $ fglrxinfo it stated direct rendering was disabled. grrr.
so the next step is to create a sym link
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/dri /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/
then i ran $ fglrx
