It turns out, the original fix caused a crash on other hardware. Kamal
Mostafa claims there, that recent versions of xorg-video-intel and
libdrm fix this bug in userspace.
I have
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.14.0-4ubuntu4
libdrm 2.4.23-1ubuntu3
Which versions are supposed to fix the issue?

Sorry for the confusion. I just installed vanilla 2.6.38.final and
discovered, that this bug is present there too. It seems that there has
been a regression between rc7 and final (because rc7 used to work). I'll
track down where it happened exactly.
