I have those for comparison. Neither displayed correctly. The first is how
everything looks at log in; the second picture is how it looks a few seconds

I have found a workaround for this bug
running the following script gives me a nice look - even in nautilus
#! /bin/sh
killall -s KILL gnome-settings-daemon
sleep 5
gnome-settings-daemon
sleep 5
killall -s KILL nautilus

just stops working.
I made a little screencast to illustrate the problem

In very, very, very rare cases (I had it twice in a month) gnome-
settings-daemon works properly .
And yes
There is no .crash file for the gnome-settings-deamon in /var/crash.

I have two virtual machines with natty on virtualbox.

crash file in /var/crash.
Anyway, I try to follow your advice and file the new bug. (Currently I get an
error "Please try again
Sorry, there was a problem connecting
you have to open that .crash file by double clicking or using ubuntu-bug
xx.crash so that the bug automatically gets reported to launchpad.

gnome-settings-daemon is still running, but obviously not functioning well.
I copied the crash-file from /var/crash to my home directory, and then,
