OP found a later version to be fixed. Requesting a backport to lucid of
the "LVM-on-RAID probing fix" mentioned in the Debian changelog.

1st I checked that '/usr/sbin/grub-probe --device /dev/md1
--target=drive' doesn't rise an error message.
I have installed manually the following packages:
dpkg -i grub-common_1.99~rc1-13ubuntu3_amd64.deb
grub-gfx
Bug is still remaining - I hope I doesn't need a server reboot :-/

The system here with the bug is a lucid system.
It has been initially installed with ubuntu in 2005 and migrated to lucid in
several updates ;-)
