I can confirm that this issue seems to be fixed since gutsy (generic
kernel). I also tested the current hardy alpha5 (generic kernel
2.6.24-10) and couldn't notice any problems in regard to the described
issue.

Problem seems to be under control since Gutsy released. Have not tried
any released of Hardy.
I am running the generic kernel with a normal CPU work load... anybody
want to confirm this?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could
test with it so we can work
Thank you hardyn for your reply!
I thought that the generic kernel would be the only one in feisty!
But after your reply I started feisty (testing partition) and saw in synaptic
that the 386 kernel isn't a link to the generic kernel!
And I have to say that the 386 kernel works great (like the 38
i spoke to ben collins about this (kernel guy), and apparently the i386
kernel in feisty has been upgraded to have uni-processor generic cpu
support, thus virtully the same kernel as the default "generic" kernel
with an expected performace loss of about 1%. I suspect that this
problem will not be
Same Problem here!

Setting cstate value to 2 solves the problem!
Now i am using 386 kernel without problems.
Does someone work on this?
Yesterday I tried feisty herd2 => same "high cpu usage idle" problem, but
setting cstate 2 doesn't solve this
Sounds about right... please try the maxcstate thing, and see if we
really do have the same problem.

like i can see the bubbles being rendered. instead of being filled in
fast, it takes about 2 seconds to fill in. everything graphic wise is
slow. for example, hold your cursor over the system menu, and the
bubble that appears should fill in rather quickly, mine takes upwards of
4 seconds

Define graphic usage?
before the maxcstate, i would have really slow video performance, even
with little things, "tool tips" would take for ever to paint, screen
repaints (maximising windows) would take forever, could see all object
being rendered. etc.

I use a Sony Vaio VGN-S460. It has the pentium Centrino processor.
After a fresh install I'm idling at 40% sometimes higher, with nothing
but the OS running. I havent tried adding this maxcstate yet, but this
whole bug seems to also affect graphic usage as well.

P-M high idle CPU usage, repo
rebuilding the kernel for non-smp takes care of the problem, but
rebuilding the kernel is alot of as of all but the most advanced ubuntu
users; and there are ALOT of P-M based machines out there.
