I don't need to change the volume slider, I want to see whether I'm
muted or speaking, and also have a quick way of getting back the mumble
window. The latter is just a minor inconvenience, the former is very
confusing if you use keys to switch between "I speak" and "muted" (as
sometimes you lose t

Just for clarification.
The indicator sound does expose the voip slider when mumble is active. I know
this does not meet all your needs but just in case you were unaware of this new
feature.
