Clint,
Martin didn't address the question, and this is undoubtedly a bug. The
justification is: "network if-down scripts will not run as expected."
Hardy will be supported for several *years* more, so it makes more sense
to fix the bug than to suggest an upgrade.

You received this bug notific
greenmoss, if you read Martin Pitt's comments, the justification for
fixing this in hardy isn't really strong enough. At this point, there's
an upgrade path to Lucid that alleviates the problem, so I think this
one is going to be a Won't Fix unless further justification is made.
Marking Won't Fix.
Sorry, Launchpad Janitor! :)
I hope this can be fixed sometime *before* Hardy goes out of support.

Martin:
One of the symlinks is correctly created (/etc/rcS.d/S40networking), but
the other two are not. This is why your scripts work on boot. However,
on a stock Hardy system, the /etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d symlinks are
missing. Thus your scripts will *not* be invoked on reboot. This is

That's not true, /etc/network/if-up.d/ and if-down.d/ etc. still exist
and work. (Well, I know that if-up.d/ works, because my DNS is relying
on it)

No, it is exactly the point. None of the infrastructure that this bug
deals with exists post-Hardy.

... and beside the point :) The check would be to create an if-down
script which does some logging, reboot (or halt), and check if it
actually got run in Natty. I. e. what this bug is all about?

Let me check for you:

It can't be fixed with the same patch, but the actual bug (not calling
ifdown scripts on shutdown) can certainly be fixed (or perhaps it is

This doesn't seem like an adequate SRU to me right now. This isn't a
data loss or other critical bug. Also, this needs to be fixed in the
current development release first.

Is the MOTU SRU team the correct one to subscribe for this ticket? I
updated the description and attached the debdiff with the very minimal
patch required.
