I use a PHP Script to generate a huge VCard out of my database. When I
supplied Evolution with that, it asked me for the username and password,
and then just displayed “Loading Addressbook summary... ...”.

I've experienced the same! Standard webdav configuration. In nautilus
it's working fine. Also with cadaver but not with evolution.

I'm having the same problem. The server's port is the default, non-SSL HTTP and
the logs show that there's no request ever made from the client while other
clients work without problems.
Also I have used this server from another host and probably older version of
Evolution in the past successful
