If this is still not working on Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal", there is a
patch upstream in the recently released kernel 3.1-rc1 which might help:

I've just fixed this issue executing this command:
sudo bash -c "echo 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto position_fix=0' >>
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"
