Shadows of most application menus (Firefox being an exception) are drawn
by the window manager/compositor. Metacity has the capability to draw
these, but it is disabled by default as Unity2D should run everywhere.
As Lohith suggests, you can enable them with gconf-editor by changing
/app/metacity/
Check the metacity property 'compositor_effects'.
