Here we go again. My browser crashed. could not kill the process or re-
start Ubuntu ...had to hard boot again.

And I checked the update manager and of course, there were a whole whack of
updates waiting!
This isn't about to go away on it's own by the looks of it.

This is a first. It looks like it not unmount a drive properly because
it was visible on the places menu after it had been safely removed. When
I clicked the icon, the computer crashed.

Using the netbook edition will not solve the network issue. The bug is
in all versions of 10.10. You can either install 10.04 or wait for
11.04 release this coming April (2011).

If you see the messages then the files should be there. Try this:
cat /var/log/syslog > ~/Desktop/Syslog
After running that you should have a syslog on your desktop. Dont
attach it yet though. Wait for another crash and then after the hard
reboot run that command.

No. I installed it from a downloaded DVD .iso file from Ubuntu.
I see in the log file viewer, those folders: syslog and messages but no
/var/log that I could see.

Thats not good. Every system should have those files. But no, you dont
have to have netbook edition installed. Did you buy the computer with

Should I be using the netbook edition instead? I am using an older Acer
Travelmate laptop I think it's a T2300 I've had this trouble since the
upgrade from Intrepid Ibex.

No. They have nothing to do with Update Manager.
...other than the fact that it is positively the updates trying to get in to my
system that is causing the crashes. And then I run Update Manager and 100% of
the time there is in fact an update ready and waiting for me to install.
...Like 5 mins

Done.
...but the problem is still there. It crashed this morning, losing my browser
and desktop (locked) so after hard booting I ran Update Manager and there was
telepathy-jabber waiting for me so I installed the update and all is well.
...for now.
