Since I always keep an image copy of previous systems I ended up going
back to a previous "clean" installation after completely wipeing my
system drive. I do not know what caused this problem and have now moved
on to a fresh install from a CD ROM package of a newer version (11.04).

I am having the same problem with my IMAC running ubuntu 10.10, I hope
someone comes up with a solution to this issue.
