The error message is no longer displayed in a dialog.
This is logged to ~/.xsession-errors:

In my case, enabling the checkbox to remember running applications on
logout, opening gnucash, logging out and logging in does not start
gnucash. Even adding gnucash to the sessions startup programs does not
start gnucash at login. I get no error message.
